  • Hon’ble Vice President Shri Hamid Ansari launched the book ‘History as a site of struggle’ by Prof. K. N.Panikkar, Chairman, KCHR on 11th September 2013 by handing over a copy to noted historian Prof. Romila Thapar. The Hon’ble Governor Shri. Nikhil Kumar, Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri. Oommen Chandy, Hon’ble Minister of State (HRD) Dr Shashi Tharoor, Hon’ble Minister Shri Sivakumar and Shri. Muraleedharan, MLA were the other guests of honour
  • Prof. Romila Thapar released the Interim Report of the seventh season excavation at Pattanam, on 12th September 2013 at KCHR by handing over a copy to Prof. K.N.Panikkar, Chairman, KCHR. It was followed by a presentation on Pattanam excavation overview by Prof P J Cherian, Director, KCHR
  • Dr P.J.Cherian, presented a paper on Indian Ocean Maritime Network and the Archaeological Evidence from Pattanam, India” in the International Seminar on Muziris held at Christ College, Irinjalakuda on 9th September 2013.
  • Dr. P.J.Cherian, Director, KCHR, who was nominated to the Advisory Council of the Shanghai Archaeology Forum, by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, China, attended the Shanghai Archaeology Forum Meeting from August 23rd to August 28th 2013. The Kodumanal excavation by Prof K Rajan nominated by Dr P J Cherian was selected by the selection committee of the Shanghai Archaeological Forum and the site was adjudged as one among the ten major archaeological sites in the world.
  • A field study on goldsmithing of Pattanam region was conducted from 3-7 September 2013 by the KCHR in collaboration with the British Museum, London. A 15 minute documentary of the survey has been produced. It will soon be made available in the websites of KCHR and BM.
  • KCHR in association with the British Museum, London and Pondicherry University organized a workshop The Archaeology of Technology and Indian Ocean Exchange : Personal Adornment from Pattanam and Beyond from 15th -19th August 2013 at Pondicherry University, Puducherry. It was the second in the series of three funded by the British Academy.
  • KCHR organized an Induction Programme for PhD fellows who received KCHR fellowship (2013) on 2nd and 3rd August 2013. All the research fellows presented their Research Proposals. There was also an interactive session under the guidance of Mr. Sajan Thomas, Ph.D Scholar of the University of Bergen, Norway, Ms Victoria Sheldon, University of Toronto, Canada and Dr Whitney, Howrah, Associate Professor, Department of History and Philosophy, Plymouth State University. Dr. J. Devika led the valedictory session.
  • The seventh season’s excavation at Pattanam was carried out from February to May 2013.
  • Dr. P.J.Cherian attended the International Conference ‘Maritime Networks and Urbanism in the Early Medieval World’ from April 9th – 18th 2013 at Denmark, and delivered a keynote address ‘Indian Ocean maritime network and urbanism: the archaeological evidence from Pattanam, India’.
  • Dr. P.J.Cherian attended the Second Eilat Conference ‘Eilat and the Negev- A Bridge between Cultures and Nations’ from March 13th – 15th 2013, and delivered the keynote address “Pattanam Archaeological Evidences and their West Asian Links.”
  • Dr Preeta Nayar attended a workshop on ‘Building Partnerships: Role of Indian Institutions’ at Coimbatore, hosted by the United States – India Education Foundation in April 2013.
  • Organised a presentation at KCHR on An Outline History of Chinese Traded Ceramics by Mr. Ran Zhang, Dept. of Archaeology, University of Durham, UK, on 22nd January 2013.
  • Prof.P.J.Cherian gave a lecture on Cultural pluralism in antiquity – signatures on Pattanam finds at the Kochi- Muziris Biennale Seminar at Fort Kochi on 13th December 2012.
  • KCHR in association with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment organized a lecture by Dr. James W. Lankton on Glass Study in India: Archaeology and Scientific Analysis on 11th December 2012.
  • The KCHR participated in the book exhibition at Trivandrum, organized in connection with Viswa Malayala Maholsavam from 30th October to November 5th 2012.
  • KCHR organized a meeting on 8th October 2012 to pay tribute to the memory of Prof. Eric Hobsbawm, the renowned British scholar and writer, who died on 1st October 2012. Tributes were paid to the life and contributions of Prof Eric Hobsbawn by Shri.John Samuel, Shri.N.Madhavankutty, Shri.M.G.Radhakrishnan, Dr.V. Karthikeyan Nair, Dr.K.Saradamony and Ms. Shilpa Sundeep. Dr P J Cherian, Director of KCHR presided over the function.
  • The first of the three British Academy funded workshops on “Indian Ocean Trade and the Archaeology of Technology” co-organised by the British Museum, London, UK and KCHR was conducted from the 12th of September to 16th of September 2012 at the Cherai Beach Resorts. Many foreign and Indian archaeologists participated in the first workshop on ceramics to study the ceramic collections from Pattanam excavations and its contemporary sites.
  • An ethno-archaeological survey on potters’ life in and around Pattanam region was conducted from the 18th to the 23rd September 2012 and a short documentary on it was brought out as part of the workshop “Indian Ocean Trade and the Archaeology of Technology”. (See the link in the Home Page)
  • Puthupally Raghavan Memorial Annual Public Lecture was delivered by Prof. V. Sanil, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT, New Delhi on ‘Philosophy and the Historical Context’ on August 25th 2012 at the Fourth Estate Hall at 4.00 pm. Prof. A Jayakrishnan, VC, Kerala University presided.
  • The latest publications of KCHR are ‘Keralathile Pazhamchollukal’; ‘Latin-Malayalam-Latin Nikhandu - Amarasimham’ Dictionarium -Dr.Kesavan Veluthat (Ed); ‘Kolezethu and Malayalam Records’-Dr.M.R.Raghava Varier (Ed) and Interim Report of the Pattanam Excavation 2012- Dr.P.J.Cherian (Ed). These publications were released by the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri. Oommen Chandy at the Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan, Nalanda, Thiruvananthapuram on August 16th 2012 and were handed over to Ms. Devika Ajikumar, student, Cotton Hill Girls School, Smt. R.K.Jayashree, Smt. Beena Sarasan and Shri. Rejikumar, Director, State Archives, respectively. The KCHR Annual Report (2010-’11) has also been brought out. Shri. T.P.Sreenivasan, Vice Chairman, Higher Education Council presided over the function.
  • A short term course on ‘The Muziris Papyrus and the Indian Ocean Trade in Antiquity’ was conducted at KCHR from August 6th – 18th 2012 which explored the 2nd century CE trade document in ancient Greek discovering the unknown aspects of the trade links between India and the Mediterranean world. Dr. Federico de Romanis, Professor at the University of Rome (Tor Vergata) was the Course Co-ordinator.
  • The sixth season excavations at Pattanam were from February to May 2012.
  • Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai Memorial Annual Lecture was delivered by Prof. C.T.Kurien, Former Director, MIDS, Chennai on ‘Whither the Indian Economy?’ in the Conference Hall of the Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan on 30th January, 2012. Prof. K.N. Panikkar, Chairman, KCHR presided over the function.
  • KCHR Research Fellowships were awarded to Ms.Shibi K, Ms. Santhi Jose, Mr. Suneesh K.K and Ms. Deepa for PhD research, Dr.Devi K K and Dr.Aparna Nair to design Post Doctoral Research Theme and Dr.K.K.Abubakkar and Dr.Greeshmalatha to streamline PhD Thesis.
